Blow Me Down
"Men do change, and change comes like a little wind that ruffles the curtains at dawn, and it comes like the stealthy perfume of wildflowers hidden in the grass." - John Steinbeck
I know that I've talked about the wind in St. John's before... But my previous accounts of the wind were nothing compared to the wind we had here last night. It was rocking so hard from the wind that it was making our bed shake.... no word of a lie.
In case your wondering... Blow Me Down is an actual town.
Blow Me Down, Nfld., 49° 31' - 55° 09'.......which is about 30km north of Corner Brook on the west coast.
One website I found states "According to local legends, this towns name was given by Captain Messervay. Messervey was an unusually small captain who stood at 4' 2" and upon his ships arrival into the Bay of Islands, which is surrounded by huge mountains, he prayed that they wouldn't "Blow-me-Down".........But then again another site gives the credit to Captain Cook whapparentlyly "circumvented and chartered NFLD, and wintered on the west coast. The west coast village of Lark Harbour was named for his ship, H.M.S. Lark".
Newfoundland also has a ton of other cool town names such as: Come-By-Chance, Pothead, Dildo, Nick's Nose Cove, Hearts Content, Cupid... just to name a few.
